BOTTLE DOCKS
The Blonde
The “Blonde” is made of rubberwood which is a hardwood belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family. It has very little tendency to warp or crack and is totally Eco-friendly.
Rubberwood is often the most misunderstood species of wood in the furniture industry. The name rubberwood invokes a variety of misconceptions as to its features and to its durability. Rubberwood (also called Parawood in Thailand) is the standard common name for the timber of Hevea brasiliensis.
Why did we choose this wood to support our gorgeous bottles?
Well, rubberwood is one of the more durable lumbers used in the manufacturing of today’s home furnishings as well as many other novelty products. Rubberwood has a dense grain character that is easily controlled in the kiln drying process. There is very little shrinkage making it one of the more stable construction materials available for furniture manufacturing. Like maple, rubberwood is a sap producing species. In the case of maple, it is sap; in the case of rubberwood, it is latex. Rubberwood produces all the latex used in the world for all rubber based products.
There is one more important feature of rubberwood that is very important to us. Rubberwood is the most ecologically “friendly” lumber used in today’s furniture industry. After the economic life of the rubber tree, which is generally 26-30 years, the latex yields become extremely low and the planters then fell the rubber trees and plant new ones. So, unlike other woods that are cut down for the sole purpose of producing furniture, rubberwood is used only after it completes its latex producing cycle and dies. This wood is therefore eco-friendly in the sense that we are now using what was going as waste…reclaiming its beauty in the form of a Bottle Dock!
The Cuveè
The Cuvee is named after blended wines…we thought we could blend some woods to give a nice ‘barber pole’ look. The Cuvee is made up of both Rubberwood and Sapele.
Rubberwood is discussed under “The Blonde” tab but here is a recap… Rubberwood is one of the more durable lumbers used in the manufacturing of today’s home furnishings as well as many other novelty products.
Now, on to Sapele…this wood is commonly known as Sapele or Sapelli and is a large, native tree to tropical Africa. The Entandrophragma cylindricum is also known as aboudikro.
This imported wood is commonly reminiscent of mahogany, a member of the same family, with a distinctive figure or shape. It has a density of 640 kg per cubic meter and is often chosen for flooring because of its awesome durability and wear.
Among its more exotic uses is that in musical instruments. It is used for the back and sides of acoustic guitar bodies, as well as the tops of electric guitar bodies. Moreover, it is also used in manufacturing the neck piece of ukuleles and 26- and 36-string harps. Last but not least…if it’s good enough for Cadillac…it’s good enough for a Bottle Dock! The American car maker Cadillac uses Sapele wood for interior wood trim on its vehicles.
